Electrical and Electronic Equipment Industry Background

Householders and businesses in the UK throw at least one million tonnes of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) away each year, and this figure is estimated to be growing by up to 80,000 tonnes annually.

The recycling and treatment of EEE is not currently undertaken to a sufficient extent, so the introduction of new rules such as the WEEE Directive has been implemented to reverse this trend.

Now, more than ever, these changes are affecting the way Business's and Organisation can dispose of their old electrical and electronic equipment. With the introduction of new laws (the WEEE Directive, Hazardous Waste Regulations, Duty of Care and the Data Protection Act) business leaders and managers are having to look closely at what they have done in the past, and consider what their actions in the future should be, to remain compliant and within the law.

The WEEE Directive

In an attempt to reduce the amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) that has been going directly to land fill for many years, the European Council & Parliament passed an EC Directive - the European Parliament and Council Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (2002/96/EC) ("the WEEE Directive")

Already adopted in many EC Member States, this Directive was implemented on January 2nd 2007 in the UK.

In principle, the WEEE Directive outlines how you can dispose of your WEEE and what responsibility both Manufacturers & Retailers of Electrical & Electronic equipment will have to assume. Its ultimate objectives are to both reduce the amount of WEEE entering landfill sites and encourage Manufacturers to develop more environmentally friendly and easier to recycle products in the future.

All recycling processes conducted by Midex not only comply with the WEEE Directive, but actually exceed its recommendations. Our objective is clear, 100% Recycling and Client Compliance with regards to all laws associated with WEEE.
